Interdisciplinarni projekt »Cutaway – Konservacija in materialna analiza arheološkega lesa« (www.rgzm.de/cutaway) obravnava vprašanje, katere metode so najprimernejše za stabilizacijo redkih lesenih predmetov in uspešno preizkuša nedestruktivno datiranje predmetov z uporabo računalniške tomografske preiskave (DendroCT). Projekt financirata nemška raziskovalna fundacija in švicarska nacionalna znanstvena fundacija. Rezultate raziskave prazgodovinskih koles pričakujemo v začetku leta 2023.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH OF A 5,200-YEAR-OLD WOODEN WHEEL FROM THE LJUBLJANA MARSHES
The interdisciplinary project “Cutaway – Conservation and Material Analysis of Archaeological Wood” (www.rgzm.de/cutaway) addresses the question of which methods are best suited to stabilize rare wooden objects and successfully tests the non-destructive dating of the objects using computed tomographic examinations (DendroCT). For this purpose, eight prehistoric wheel finds from the region of the Alpine countries are being examined, including one of the oldest wooden wheels from the Laibacher Moor in Slovenia as well as more than eighty other preserved wooden samples from the reference collection of the Römisch Germanisches Zentralmuseum, Leibniz Research Institute for Archaeology (RGZM) in Mainz, Germany. The DendroCT process is currently being implemented together with physicists and engineers at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) and the dendrochronologists from the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments at the Stuttgart Regional Council and the University of Ljubljana. However, initial investigations within the “Cutaway” project using the DendroCT method also show that conservation methods used to date can preserve archaeological wet wood finds, but can alter the wood structure, which, depending on the type of wood, can make it difficult or impossible to detect the annual rings in the CT data. The project is funded by the German Research Foundation and the Swiss National Science Foundation. The results on the investigations of the prehistoric wheel finds are expected at the beginning of 2023.
